María Emilía Jónsdóttir was born on September 8, 1901 in Winnipegosis, Manitoba. She died in North Battleford, Saskatchewan on October 3, 1936.

María was the daughter of Jón Búason and Björg Jónsdóttir in Manitoba. She completed elementary and trade school studies in Reykjavík before she got married. Páll came west across the ocean in 1913 and settled in Winnipeg. He first worked for a saddler, but then turned to carpentry. His interest in commerce led to a year’s work at Eaton’s (1917-1918), then he was hired by the Safeway chain of stores and worked there for 14 years. He opened his own store and ran it for 20 years, Toronto Grocery & Meats at 714 Ellice Ave. He participated in the social activities of his countrymen in the city, was the secretary of the Helga Magra association and the Frón Icelandic Club in Winnipeg.
