Marta Ólöf Magnúsdóttir was born in Eyjafjarðarsýsla on November 11, 1879. She died on May 17, 1937 in Winnipeg.

Magnús came west to the Thingvalla settlement in N. Dakota with his parents, Björn Halldórsson and Hólmfríður Einarsdóttir and siblings in 1884. He received his primary education in his home community and attended university in Winnipeg. He worked as a doctor in several places in N. Dakota before moving to Winnipeg in 1917. Marta came west with her parents in 1887 and her father, Magnús Jósepsson (Magnús Skaptason in the west), settled in the Hnausa settlement.
