Matthías was the son of Jón Matthíasson and Stefanía Kristinsdóttir in the Garðar settlement in N. Dakota. He attended the University of North Dakota and medical school in Winnipeg. He moved to Wisconsin where he received his degree in dentistry from Marquette University in Milwaukee in 1934. He practiced dentistry in Wisconsin.
