Oddur Ólafsson was born in Riverton in the Fljóts settlement on February 25, 1888.

Oddur was the son of Ólafur Oddsson and Kristbjörg Antoníusardóttir, who came west to Manitoba in 1879. When Ólafur came of age, he worked as a fisherman and later as a porter on Lake Winnipeg between Riverton and the San Antonio Goldmines. He was a ship captain for 28 years.
