Ólafía was the daughter of Sveinbjörn Loftsson and Steinunn Ásmundsdóttir who came west from Dalasýsla to Winnipeg in 1887. Sveinbjörn took land in the Þingvalla Settlement in Saskatchewan and started farming, but later was a store manager in Churchbridge. Guðjón first lived with his father and his family in Brandon but moved in 1899 to Winnipegosis. He later moved to Winnipeg and was there 1906 to 1911 but then the road led him to Saskatchewan, where he first lived in Bradenbury and then in Wynyard. In 1924 the family moved to the Pacific and lived in Seattle until 1936 when the road led them to California.
