Ólafur came to the West in 1911 and travelled to Manitoba. He worked at various jobs in Winnipeg but then moved north to the Hayland settlement in 1913. There he met his wife, the widow Þórhildur Hávarðardóttir, and they married. He moved onto her land, farmed, and was the settlement’s mail clerk.
