Ólafur was the son of Jón Konráðsson and Guðfinna Þorsteinsdóttir from Kárdalstunga in Vatnsdal in Húnavatnssýsla. He came west with them to New Iceland in 1923. Ólafur went to middle school there, but at the age of 15 he started fishing in Lake Winnipeg and worked until 1949. Sylvía was the daughter of Guðni Þorsteinsson and Kristín Jóhannsdóttir in Gimli, Manitoba.
