Ólöf’s parents were Jón Jónsson Austmann and Guðlaug Halldórsdóttir. Jón was the son of Eiríkur Eymundsson and Helga Jóhannesdóttir who came west in 1878. They first lived in the Fljóts settlement in 1880 but moved to the floods in New Iceland and settled in N. Dakota. They returned to Oddi in the Fljóts settlement in 1882. Jón grew up in the Fljóts settlement where he did all kinds of transport on the river and then later on the lake.
