Páll Hallgrímsson was born in Húnavatnssýsla on June 21, 1897. He took the name Paul Hallson in the west.

Páll came west across the ocean in 1913 and settled in Winnipeg. He first worked for a saddler, but then turned to carpentry. His interest in commerce led to a year’s work at Eaton’s (1917-1918), then he was hired by the Safeway chain of stores and worked there for 14 years. He opened his own store and ran it for 20 years, Toronto Grocery & Meats at 714 Ellice Ave. He participated in the social activities of his countrymen in the city, was the secretary of the Helga Magra association and the Frón Icelandic Club in Winnipeg. María completed her elementary and commercial school studies in Reykjavík before she got married.
