Sigmundur was the son of Jón Björnsson and Jósefbína Jósefsdóttir, early settlers in New Iceland in 1902. He went to school in Gimli, enrolled in the Department of Agriculture at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, graduated from there, and worked on the farm with his father. He learned to make butter and worked at it for many years at Riverton Creamery and was CEO there. Florence was the daughter of William Rockett and Jónína Solveig Björnsdóttir in Riverton.
