Sigríður Guðlaug Eggertsdóttir was born in Eyjafjarðarsýsla on November 26, 1901. She took the last name Peterson with marriage.

Sigríður was the daughter of Eggert Sigurgeirsson and Svanhildur Sigurbjörnsdóttir, who came west to Manitoba in 1906. They settled in the Siglunes Settlement where Sigríður grew up and attended school. She went on to further study in Winnipeg, starting at the Mulvey School and later completing a teacher’s degree from the University of Manitoba. She went on to graduate school in Vancouver and completed a B. Ed. degree from the University of British Columbia in 1960. Sigríður taught English and history in various secondary schools in Manitoba until she married Sveinbjörn who was a station manager at C.N.R., the railway company, in Canada.
