Sigrún was the daughter of Kristjón Sigurðsson and Indiana Sveinsdóttir, early settlers in the Geysir settlement in Manitoba. She earned a B.A. degree from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg in 1948. She continued her studies at a trade school in the city and graduated in 1950. Böðvar was the son of Böðvar H.
