Sigurður Victor Stefánsson was born in the Hnausa settlement in New Iceland on January 23, 1895.

Sigurður was the son of the couple Stefán Sigurðsson, shopkeeper in Hnausa, and Valgerður Jónsdóttir. Sigurður attended school in Hnausa and at a young age started fishing in Lake Winnipeg and later also had a fish store in Riverton. He sat for many years on the local council in Bifröst, then became mayor of Riverton in 1951. Kristín was the daughter of Bjarni Marteinsson from Stafafell in Lón and Helga Guðmundsdóttir from Flaga in Breiðdal.
