Sigurlaug was the daughter of Þorsteinn Þorsteinsson Líndal and Sigríður Bjarnadóttir. They first lived in N. Dakota, then in the Þingvalla settlement in Saskatchewan, then Selkirk, Manitoba, and finally west in Blaine, Washington. Jón was the son of Björn Stefánsson and Guðrún Andrésdóttir, who came west in 1887. They settled in Winnipeg, where Björn died a few years later. Guðrún moved west with her children to Seattle, where she married Sigfús Jónasson Salomon. Jón joined the US Navy at the age of 16 and served for three years. Jón and Sigurlaug settled at Point Roberts, Washington, farmed there, and Jón worked in the summers at the Alaska Packers Association cannery. Later he was the store manager of the G. & B. Canning Company.
