Sigurveig was the daughter of Bogi Sigurgeirsson and Kristín Ásmundsdóttir in Mikley. Þorsteinn was the son of Páll Sveinnbjörn Jakobsson and Sigríður Guðrún Jensdóttir who came west in 1887 and settled in Manitoba. Þorsteinn started fishing in Lake Winnipeg as a young man but also worked as a carpenter. In 1946, he moved with his family west to the Pacific Ocean, where they settled in Steveston, near Vancouver. There Þorsteinn got a job in the freezing department of British Columbia Fish Packers Ltd.
