Snjólaug Guðmundsdóttir was born in N. Múlasýsla on August 28, 1846. She died at Betel in Gimli on June 6, 1942. She took the last name Guttormsson in the west.

Spouse: 1889 Jón Guttormsson b. 1842 in N. Múlasýsla, d. in the Fljóts settlement in New Iceland on February 5, 1895.

Childless, but Jón had two sons, Vigfús and Guttormur, with his first wife, Pálína Ketilsdóttir

Snólaug’s sister Margrét and her husband, Jón Björnsson, came to the West in 1876 and settled in the Fljóts settlement. Their mother, Guðrún Eyjólfsdóttir, came west in 1883, together with her son Friðrik and his family. They settled in Minneota, Minnesota. Snjólaug moved to Denmark, where she attended a Danish school for housewives in Copenhagen. No doubt she heard about her mother’s and brother’s move to the west, because she came west shortly after. Studying in Denmark came in handy, both in cooking and sewing in the settlement by the Icelandic River (Íslendingafljöt).
