Stefán Björnsson was born in Húnavatnssýsla in 1880. He died in Saskatchewan in 1942. He had the last name Núpdal in the west.

Stefán was the son of Björn Guðmundsson and Agnes Teitsdóttir who came west in 1884. They took land near Mountain, N. Dakota and there Stefán grew up. He later worked as a farmer near Elfros in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð). Stefanía came to the West with her parents, Daníel Grímsson and Sigríður Þorsteinsdóttir, in 1885. They first lived in Garðar, N. Dakota and later in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð).
