He attended elementary school and finished 11th grade but then enlisted in the army and served in the military in a special engineering department until 1941. He then became a farmer in the Lundar settlement. Valgerður was the daughter of Guðni Backman and Kristín Sigfríður Sigurbjarnardóttir in Clarkleigh, Manitoba.
