Stefán was the son of Þorsteinn Jónsson and Guðrún Bjarnadóttir, who came west in 1879 and settled in New Iceland. They moved from there in 1881 to the Argyle Settlement in Manitoba. Stefán grew up there and became a farmer in Cypress River (Brúarbyggð) in Manitoba. Sigríður was the daughter of Þorsteinn Eyjólfsson and Lilja Hallsdóttir who lived in the Fljóts Settlement in New Iceland.
