Stefanía’s parents were Gunnar Björnsson and Ingibjörg Ágústína Jónsdóttir in Minneota. She grew up there and in 1925 moved with her parents to Minneapolis. She graduated from John Marshall High School in Minneapolis in 1934, earned a B.A. degree in ancient art history and music from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and a M.A. degree from the same school in medieval art history. She studied music and then became an organist in various churches and taught in middle schools. Church history was her favorite among more historical topics. She researched one thing or another in the history of Iceland and wrote a thesis on Iceland’s foreign trade from the 13th century to the 17th. Her husband was the Dean of the Mathematics Department at Ohio University in Athens and taught mathematics in many places in the United States.
