Stefanía came to the West with her parents, Daníel Grímsson and Sigríður Þorsteinsdóttir, in 1885. They first lived in Garðar, N. Dakota and later in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð). Stefán was the son of Björn Guðmundsson and Agnes Teitsdóttir who came west in 1884. They took land near Mountain, N. Dakota and there Stefán grew up. He worked as a farmer near Elfros in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð).
