Sveinn Jóhannes Sigurðsson was born in Manitoba on February 12, 1934.

Sveinn was the son of Kristjón Sigurðsson and Indiana Sveinsdóttir, early settlers in New Iceland. He was a farmer in the Geysir settlement in New Iceland with his brother Ólaf. Together they were active in progressive causes and took a great part in the work of various associations, both in Manitoba and Western Canada.
