Sylvía was the daughter of Guðni Þorsteinsson and Kristín Jóhannsdóttir of Gimli, Manitoba. Sylvía graduated from high school in Gimli in 1929, attended Manitoba Normal School 1930-31 and Toronto Conservatory of Music 1937-38 where she graduated with a teacher’s degree in 1938. Ólafur was the son of Jón Konráðsson and Guðfinna Þorsteinsdóttir from Kárdalstunga in Vatnsdal in Húnavatnssýsla. He came west with them to New Iceland in 1923. Ólafur went to middle school there, but at the age of 15 he started fishing in Lake Winnipeg and worked until 1949.
