Thor Björgvin Fjelsted was born in Arborg on November 9, 1913.

Thor was the son of Ásgeir Þorbergsson and Ingunn G Kristjónsdóttir in Arborg, Manitoba. He went to school there and started working for himself at the postal service at an early age. In 1941 he joined the Canadian Air Force (R.C.A.F.), training in various locations in Canada before being sent to England. There he belonged to the Bison Squadron, an Air Force unit that made countless dangerous flights over enemy territory. He received many awards at the end of the war. Soon after his return, he moved with his widowed mother to Winnipeg and lived there after that.
