Þórdís was the daughter of Jóhann Arngrím Jósefsson from Torfastaðir in Vopnafjörður and his first wife, Guðný Sigurbjarnardóttir Hofteig, also from Vopnafjörður. Jóhann was the son of Vigfús Jósefsson and Sigurborg Hjálmarsdóttir from Leifsstaðir in Vopnafjörður. They came west in 1878 and settled in Minnesota. Þórdís became a teacher after graduating from Minneota High School and Mankato State College.
