Þórhallur Magnússon was born in Vatnsdal in Húnavatnssýsla on January 14, 1882. He took the name Þórhallur (Thor) M Blöndal in the west.

Spouse: 1919 Helga Sigurjónsdóttir b. in the Eyford settlement in N. Dakota on August 26, 1900, d. September 30, 1948.

Þórhallur graduated from the agricultural school in Eiður in 1902. In the same year he went to Norway and from there to Denmark. He studied at a community college there for two years, then went to England but moved to the West in 1904. He had studied hair cutting and when he came to Winnipeg, he worked in a barber shop. He entered the Army in 1914 and was a lieutenant in World War I until 1919. He moved to San Francisco in 1923 where he also worked as a barber. He was for a while in the military service of the United States in both the Philippines and Hawaii. Helga was the daughter of Sigurjón Gestsson and Arnthóra Jóhannesdóttir, who came west in 1883 and lived in the Eyford settlement in N. Dakota.
