Þórunn was the daughter of Guðbjartur Jónsson and Guðrún Ólafsdóttir in N. Dakota. She attended elementary school in Bottineau and then went to Minot, N. Dakota where she graduated from Minot Teachers’ College in 1924. She taught for five years in various parts of the state.
