Þorvaldur Sigurjónsson was born in New Iceland on October 23, 1897. He died in Winnipeg on September 15, 1979. He was known as Dr. Thorvaldur Johnson in the west.

Þorvaldur was the son of Sigurjón Jónsson and Guðrún Þorvaldsdóttir at Víðidalstunga in the Árnes settlement in New Iceland. Þorvalður entered the university of Saskatchewan and completed his B.Sc. degree in 1922. From there he went to Minnesota and in 1925 he completed his M.Sc. degree from the University of Minnesota. From there he completed his doctorate in plant diseases in 1930 and moved to Winnipeg the same year, where he worked on plant disease research. In 1957 he became director of the Canada Department of Agricultural Research Laboratory in Winnipeg. Rannveig was the daughter of Steindór Árnason and Ingibjörg Björnsdóttir, early settlers in the Víðir settlement in New Iceland.
