Tryggvi was the son of Halldór Björnsson and Jakobína Kristjana Dínusdóttir in N. Dakota. He developed an interest in music as a young man and went to Winnipeg to study with Jónas Pálsson. There he studied piano and music theory. He continued his studies, going to New York where the wife of a well-known pianist, Joseph Lhevinne, taught him. After completing his studies, he gave concerts and composed music. He then became a teacher in 1922, together with his wife, in New Jersey.
