Vigdís was the daughter of Kristjón Sigurðsson and Indiana Sveinsdóttir, early settlers in the Geysir settlement in New Iceland. Vigdís attended primary school in Árborg and graduated from high school in 1950. Two years later she completed her teaching qualification in Winnipeg. She taught in primary schools in Geysir and also in evening schools (adult education schools) for adults in the settlement. The Canadian government funded the establishment of such schools which were intended to promote adult education and support them in terms of employment. She participated in the establishment of the Geysir Community Club.
