William Erling Kristjánsson was born in the Svold settlement in N. Dakota on April 28, 1920.

William was the son of Kristján Tryggvi Dínusson and Hallfríður Guðbrandsdóttir, early settlers in the Svold settlement in N. Dakota. He grew up there, received his elementary education and went on to graduate school in agricultural science at Oklahoma State University, where he earned a B.S. degree in 1941. He continued his studies at Perdue University in Indiana and completed his doctorate there in 1949 and later taught at various universities. He did military service in Iceland 1941-44, where he met his wife. She was the daughter of Reverend Hermann Hjartason in Skútustaðir.
