Guðný Anna Stefánsdóttir was born in New Iceland on April 7, 1879. She died at Betel care home in Gimli on August 30, 1966. She took the last name Thorkelson with marriage.

Guðný was the daughter of Stefán Jónsson and Kristín Jóhannesdóttir in Gimli. Guðmundur came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his foster parents, Stefán Sigurðsson and Guðrún Ísleifsdóttir, in 1887. He moved with them to New Iceland and stayed with them until adulthood and then took land in the Árnes settlement New Iceland.
