Jón was son of Guðmundur Marteinsson and Kristín Gunnlaugsdóttir, who emigrated West in 1878 and became farmers in New Iceland. Jón was a barber by trade and in his yonger years, worked as such in Winnipeg. He later became marine engineer and was at seauntil he joined the Canadian Army in 1941. He was stationed in Shilo, Manitoba nearly 10 years.
