Magnús’ parents were Friðrik Þórðarson and Guðrún Lárusdóttir. He used the surname Friðrik skrifaði sig vestra Bjarnason because he was adopted by Rev. Jón Bjarnason and his wife Lára. She was related to Friðrik. Magnús was raised by his mother’s sister Guðný and her husband, Magnús Paulson in Winnipeg. Magnús Theodore graduated from The Jón Bjarnason Academy in Winnipeg in 1927lauk prófi frá Jóns Bjarnasonar skóla í Winnipeg árið 1927 and entered the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg.
