Þórður Ólafsson was born on March 30, 1876 in West Iceland. He died on December 8, 1942 in St. Louis County in Minnesota.

Þórður may have been the son of Ólafur Ólafsson and Þuríður Guðmundsdóttir, both deceased before 1891, who lived first in Snæfellsnessýsla and later in Hnappadalssýsla. Information is missing about Sigrún. In the 1910 census, Þórður is a married man, living with his wife and child in Tacoma, Washington on the Pacific coast. He works with the railroad, but in 1930, the census says he lives in Duluth, Minnesota. They later moved to Proctor, west of Duluth, where they lived for a long time.
