Helga Jónasdóttir was born in Húnavatnssýsla in 1837. She died in Manitoba on November 19, 1915.

Helga came to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1887 with the youngest child, Bjarni Ágúst, age 7. She moved south to Mountain, N. Dakota where she rented a room and made a living from knitting. Little Bjarni could go to school there. In the summer of 1910, she visited her sons in Manitoba and stayed with them for the next few years, and there she died at Björn’s home in New Iceland.

The husband Bjarni became blind so his son Jóhann went to Iceland in 1900 and brought him back west to Mountain in N. Dakota where Sigríður, Bjarni’s oldest daughter, lived with her family. Bjarni was there for 5 years, but moved from there to Manitoba with his daughter, Þorbjörg, and together they settled in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan, west of Wynyard. Bjarni lived there for the rest of his life.
