Aðalbjörg came west to Canada in 1873 with her parents, Kristinn Ólafsson and Katrín Ólafsdóttir. Einar came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1876 with his mother, Elín Magnúsdóttir, and siblings. They lived in New Iceland five years, them moved to the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota in 1881.
