Aðalsteinn was the son of Sigfús Bergmann and Anna Bjarnadóttir, pioneers in N. Dakota in 1882. He moved west to the Pacific with his parents before the turn of the 20th century, then to Morton, Manitoba and then to Worrington, Oregon where the family lived 1903-1905. From there the road led to the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð), where his father bought a store and Aðalsteinn started working in the store in 1910.
