Alma was the daughter of Guðjón Sófóníus Daníelsson and Una Guðlaugur Þórarinsdóttir, both of whom were born in Iceland. She attended elementary school at Bjarmaskóli, attended Daniel McIntyre College Institute in Winnipeg, and completed grade 12 at St. Johns High School in the city. She then studied nursing at Grace Hospital in the city from 1946-1949 and completed her R.N. degree in 1949. She then worked at various health institutions in Manitoba from 1949-1965. John Allen was an American, working in machine repair.
