Andres was the son of Þorberg Fjeldsted and Helga Guðmundsdóttir who came west in 1887 and first lived in Mikley and later in Selkirk, Manitoba. He attended Grunnskóla in Gimli in New Iceland and then studied for a year in the agricultural department of the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. He fished for a while on Lake Winnipeg and was a game warden on the lake. In 1933 he bought land in the Framnes settlement which was called Kelduland. Agnete was the daughter of Jón Gunnarsson and Marie Christine Kjær who lived in Árborg, Manitoba.
