Árni Árnason was born in 1839 in Skagafjarðarsýsla. He died in Brown, Manitoba in 1902.

Árni brought the family west in 1883 and settled in the Akra Settlement in N.Dakota. Traveling with the family was Valgerður’s mother, Margrét Sveinbjarnardóttir. They moved north to the Brown Settlement in 1899 where Árni died, the first Icelander to be buried in the Icelandic church in the community. Valgerður and her son Árni moved to Saskatchewan in 1923. Her daughters Guðrún Sigurlína and Rannveig Petrína married Canadian men and settled in Archerville. The mother moved there.
