Árni lost his mother, Oktavía Jónsdóttir, on April 2,1900. He was taken in as a foster child by the couple Sigvaldur Baldvinsson and Guðrún Jónsdóttir. He went with them to the West in 1902 and settled in N. Dakota. Árni lived there the rest of his life, the longest in the Garðar settlement.
