He had come west to Winnipeg in 1886 with his parents, Sæmundur Jónsson and Helga Gísladóttir. He was in Duluth, Minnesota a number of years, then moved to Manitoba, and in 1910 bought land in Árnes in New Iceland. He moved from there to Selkirk in 1920.
