Ásmundur Gissurarson was born on February 7, 1872 in Gullbringusýsla.

He emigrated west to Spanish Fork, Utah in 1883. According to a source in Utah, he was with “Kristína Jónsdóttir” on a part of the voyage with the steamship Wisconson, which was built in 1881 and sailed on the Great Lakes in the United States. The same source says that Þorsteinn Jónsson said in a letter from Spanish Fork in 1883 that Ásmundur was a frequent visitor to his home on Sundays.   (IGtU, Ashby 2008)
