Jón came west across the sea in 1900 to Winnipeg, Manitoba. He spent some time in Pembina N. Dakota before moving to Canada and bought land in the Valla Settlement in Saskatchewan. In 1912, he sold his land and moved to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan where he took land west of Wynyard. Ástbjörg came west in 1887 with her parents, Björn Erlendsson and Guðrún Jónsdóttir. They lived in N. Dakota.
