Bjarni Bjarnason was born in Strandasýsla on June 15, 1848. He died in the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota on September 26, 1901.

They emigrated west to Canada in 1883, took a train from Quebec to Pembina, N. Dakota. Kristján, Sigríður’s brother, waited there, and he moved the family to Garður where he lived. (He had emigrated west in 1878.) Bjarni took land south of Garðar and built a two-room log house where the youngest children were born.
