Bjarni Jóhannesson was born in Húnavatnssýsla in 1886. He died in 1964 in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan. He is registered Bjarni J. Ólafsson or Barney Olafson in the west.

Bjarni was a year old when he came west in 1887 with his parents, Jóhannes Ólafsson and Margrét Bjarnadóttir, who settled in New Iceland and that is where Bjarni up. He moved to Winnipeg where he worked as a carpenter and he worked for some time in Mountain, N. Dakota. He took land in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in 1905. Olga, also known as Olgeirína in western sources, came west to the Lakes Settlement in 1910. She was the daughter of Sveinn Ingimundsson and Karítas Þorsteinsdóttir of Efriey, W. Skaftafellssýsla. She was the sister of the painter Jóhannes Kjarval.
