Björn emigrated west to Utah in 1886 and settled in Spanish Fork. María emigrated with her first husband, Jóhannes Jónsson, and their daughter Ólafía in 1882. Björn and María moved to Dawson in the Yukon where María died in 1896. Because of that, Björn moved to Blaine, Washington, where he bought land and lived there from then on.
