They emigrated to Markland in New Scotland (Nova Scotia) in 1878. The family moved to Winnipeg in 1882 and then further west to the Þingvalla Settlement in Saskatchewan in the spring of 1886. They lived there until 1893 when they moved to Big Point, Manitoba.
