Björn was the son of Stíg Þorvaldsson and Þórunn Björnsdóttir who lived in the Akra Settlement in N. Dakota, while the parents of Guðný were Friðrik Jóhannesson and his second wife Ingibjörg Guðmundsdóttir. Björn was a car mechanic and had an auto repair shop and auto dealership in Cavalier, Pembina County. The couple later moved to California.
